Nothing about it is large. From the airport to Struga by road is about 13 km and into Ohrid town about 14 km, and the building is quiet between arrivals.

At the border

Two international crossings sit on this lake and neither is far from the runway. Qafë Thanë pass takes the main road into Albania from beyond Struga; the second lies at the southern tip of the water and is the shorter option when the target is Pogradec rather than Elbasan. Neither proximity buys you anything on its own. Taking a hired vehicle out of North Macedonia depends on the rental company saying yes, in advance and in writing, with the countries you intend to enter named on the agreement — a decision made at collection, weeks earlier if you have any sense, and never at the crossing itself.

Kosovo is the neighbour that surprises people: it lies outside the international motor-insurance card system altogether, its 2011 application having been concluded not to meet the conditions on international recognition of vehicle plates and on UN membership. Cover for a vehicle driven there is arranged on its own terms. Albania, Greece and Bulgaria all sit inside the system, which leaves the hire company's consent, not the insurance, as the likelier obstacle.

The route

Turn one way out of the gate or the other and you have committed to a different half of the basin. Ohrid town lies about 14 km east and ends under the walls of Samuel's Fortress; Struga sits about 13 km west, where the Black Drin leaves the water and splits the place in two. Because the airfield sits between the pair rather than behind either, choosing one over the other costs nothing in driving time — which is worth knowing if a booking engine has quietly assumed you meant the larger town.

Past Struga the shore lane runs on to Kališta Monastery and then climbs towards Qafë Thanë pass and the Albanian frontier, which is why a Struga base tends to suit an Albania-bound itinerary. South of Ohrid the eastern shore threads through the lakeside villages towards the monastery at the southern end. East is the long one: Ohrid to Macedonia Square in central Skopje measures about 172 km by road, and that drive — not the airport hop — is the reason a one-way hire is worth pricing rather than assuming.

The westward run repays a slow morning more than a fast one. The Black Drin, which leaves the lake in the middle of Struga, then runs 149 km to meet the White Drin at Kukës in Albania and become the Drin, and the road broadly keeps it company. Near the village of Radolishta, a little inland of that road, the Radolishta basilica preserves a mosaic floor from the fourth century. Kališta Monastery, believed to date from the sixteenth, holds frescoes of the fourteenth and fifteenth. Neither detains you long, and both are exactly the sort of stop a hire car exists to make.

What you see along the way

The shoulder weeks are the strongest argument for having a car at all. Late April, and again the second half of September, give you a shore road that is not queueing at every village and a lake still warm enough to stop beside. The UNESCO World Heritage listing over this water — inscribed in 1979, extended in 1980 to take in the historic area of Ohrid town, and extended again in May 2019 to the Albanian side — is spread along a shoreline that no single day on foot will cover.

The water itself explains the driving. Lake Ohrid covers 358 km², reaches 288 m at its deepest and sits at 693 m above sea level, and its oldest sediments are Pliocene, possibly three to five million years old; it harbours more than two hundred endemic species. A circuit of it is the only practical way to see more than one face of it inside a day. Those same shoulder weeks are when the departures board is thinnest, and that is the honest trade: an easier road and a quieter shore, against a narrower choice of flights.
