Over Llogara to the Ionian, back to the lake through Korçë

Pairing the Albanian Riviera with Lake Ohrid works as one circuit rather than an out-and-back: north-west over Qafë Thanë to Vlorë, south on the SH8 across Llogara Pass at 1,027 m through Dhërmi and Himarë to Sarandë, then inland by Gjirokastër and Korçë. Measured leg by leg the ring closes at roughly 652 km.

Most Albania itineraries treat the Ionian coast and Lake Ohrid as two separate holidays, because seen from Tirana they pull in opposite directions and each wants its own return leg. Seen from the lake itself they close into a ring. Drive west out of the basin, come down to the sea at Vlorë, follow the coast road for its whole length, turn the wheel inland at Sarandë — and the road home runs through Gjirokastër and Korçë without repeating a single kilometre.

That ring is worth planning around three things rather than around beaches: one pass, one road and one long inland leg. The pass is Llogara, at 1,027 m, where the Adriatic half of the drive ends and the Ionian begins. The road is the SH8, reconstructed in 2009 and still the only through route along the Bregu. The inland leg is Gjirokastër to Korçë, about 175 km of mountain driving over roughly four hours, and it is that leg — not the swimming — that decides how many nights the coast can have.

The route

Read clockwise from the lake, the circuit has five measured legs. Ohrid to Vlorë is about 217 km and close to four hours, running west out of the basin and down the Shkumbin valley past Elbasan before turning south across the coastal plain. Vlorë to Sarandë is about 115 km — barely half as far — yet it takes about two hours thirty-five, because the SH8 climbs 40 km to the summit at Llogara, drops 21 km to Dhërmi, and then contours ledge by ledge above every bay as far as Lukovë.

The three inland legs look shorter on paper and drive slower in practice. Sarandë to Gjirokastër is about 53 km and an hour. Gjirokastër to Korçë is about 175 km and four hours, the longest single day on the ring and the one that has to be protected when nights get moved around. Korçë back to Ohrid measures about 92 km and roughly two hours on the driving profile, which returns it by the Qafë Thanë corridor rather than the lakeside post at Sveti Naum; confirm which post suits your vehicle before planning a day around the shorter line on the map. Added up, the five legs close at about 652 km.

What you see along the way

The descent south from the summit is the sequence people actually remember. Llogara Pass sits at 1,027 m in the Ceraunian Mountains and links the Dukat valley behind you to Himarë ahead, with Orikum the last town on the northern side and Dhërmi the first village on the southern. Llogara National Park was designated on 21 November 1966, holds IUCN category II status, and covers ground from 200 m up to 2,020 m — Bosnian pine, black pine and Bulgarian fir on the upper slopes, griffon vulture, golden eagle and chamois on its species records. Julius Caesar landed at Palasë on 4 January 48 BC and rested his legion below the same climb.

Beneath the pass the villages arrive in a fixed order along the Bregu: Palasë, Kondraq, Dhërmi, Ilias, Vuno, Himara, Pilur, Kudhës, Qeparo, Borsh, Piqeras, Sasaj, Lukovë, Shën Vasil and Nivicë-Bubari. Between Dhërmi and Vuno, only about 8 km apart by road, a brook has cut the Gjipe canyon into calcareous rock: 800 m long, narrowing to between 10 and 20 m wide, with caves and worked rock formations along its length. Six or seven kilometres past Himarë, Porto Palermo Castle stands on its own low spit above the water.

Practical details

The Himarë region is the middle third of the coast and the sensible place to break the drive: a strip roughly 20 km long by 5 km wide covering 132.13 km², bounded by the 2,000-metre Ceraunian Mountains behind and the Ionian in front, its low hills terraced and planted with olive and citrus. Porto Palermo Castle lies about 6.7 km from the town. An inscription above the entrance records that French engineers built it in 1804 for Ali Pasha of Tepelena; it is three-sided, with three large gun bastions and a hexagonal central chamber whose domed ceiling rests on six pillars.

Distances along this coast are short and the clock is not. Himarë to Dhërmi measures about 16 km but half an hour; Himarë to Borsh about 18 km and forty minutes; Borsh to Sarandë about 39 km and just under the hour. Borsh is the longest beach on the Ionian Sea at 7 km. Two nights somewhere between Dhërmi and Qeparo turns the SH8 from a transit into the reason for the trip, and it removes the standing temptation to drive the pass, walk the canyon and reach Sarandë in a single afternoon.

Places along the way

The return leg is where the circuit earns its shape, because it is the half nobody drives by accident. Gjirokastër stands at 300 m in the Drino valley between the Gjerë mountains and the river, 53 km up from the sea. Gjirokastër Fortress sits at 336 m with five towers, a clock tower, two teqe and a cistern, extended westward by Ali Pasha of Tepelena after 1812; its military museum holds captured artillery and a United States Air Force aircraft. The town enters the record in 1336 as Argyrokastro, was made his capital by Gjon Zenebishi in 1417 and fell to the Ottomans the following year.

Korçë is the other half of the return and a complete change of register — a city on a plateau at 850 m ringed by the Morava Mountains, four hours east of the Drino and nothing like it. The Mirahori Mosque at its centre was built between 1484 and 1495 by Iljaz Bey Mirahor and is the second-oldest in the country; the National Museum of Medieval Art holds some 7,000 icons alongside textile, stone and metal work. The 2023 census counted 43,254 residents in the administrative unit. From here the lake is 92 km off, and Pogradec's shore is the first open water you meet.

Season and timing

Two calendars have to agree on this ring, and they overlap for less of the year than the beach photographs suggest. The coast is generous — Sarandë records over 300 sunny days a year — but the SH8 is a mountain road for its first 60 km, and the Llogara descent in low cloud is a slow, wet piece of driving rather than the view it is sold as. The other end sits high too: the lake surface at 693 m, Ohrid town at 695 m and Korçë at 850 m, which is why the inland leg holds winter noticeably longer than the shore does.

June and September are the two months when the pass, the coast road and the inland crossing all behave at once. Early October still works if the trip is weighted towards Gjirokastër and Korçë rather than swimming, and the Drino valley is at its best then. July and August put the whole of the Bregu onto one two-lane road: the villages between Palasë and Qeparo have no bypass and no second route, so move between them early and stay put in the afternoon. If the lake end matters, note that Ohrid's own high season fills the old town from mid-July.

Good to know

  • Driven as a ring from the lake rather than out and back from the capital, this circuit closes at about 652 km: 217 km to Vlorë, 115 km down the coast to Sarandë, 53 km up to Gjirokastër, 175 km across to Korçë and 92 km home to the water.
  • Llogara National Park was designated on 21 November 1966 and its ground runs from 200 m to 2,020 m, so the 1,027 m pass the SH8 crosses sits a little under halfway up the park's own vertical range.
  • The Gjipe canyon is 800 m long and narrows to between 10 and 20 m, and the two villages it separates, Dhërmi and Vuno, are only about 8 km apart by road.
  • Borsh is the longest beach on the Ionian Sea at 7 km, and it lies about 18 km south of Himarë and about 39 km north of Sarandë on the same two-lane coast road.
  • Korçë stands on a plateau at 850 m, some 157 m above the surface of Lake Ohrid, so the mountain leg between them ends lower than it starts even though the map reads like a climb.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for the Albanian Riviera and Lake Ohrid?

Eight to ten nights is the honest minimum for the full ring. The coast wants two nights between Dhërmi and Qeparo and two more around Sarandë, Gjirokastër one, Korçë one, and the 175 km inland leg needs a day of its own rather than a morning.

How hard is the Llogara Pass to drive?

The SH8 is a surfaced two-lane road reconstructed in 2009, but it climbs about 40 km from Vlorë to 1,027 m and then loses that height in roughly 21 km to Dhërmi. Slow, exposed and unpleasant in low cloud rather than technically difficult.

How do you get from the Albanian Riviera back to Lake Ohrid?

Inland, not back up the coast. Sarandë to Gjirokastër is about 53 km, Gjirokastër to Korçë about 175 km over four hours, and Korçë to Ohrid about 92 km, which the driving profile routes by the Qafë Thanë corridor rather than the lakeside post.

Where is the Gjipe canyon and how big is it?

Between the villages of Dhërmi and Vuno on the Ionian coast, about 8 km apart by road. The canyon is calcareous, runs 800 m long, narrows to between 10 and 20 m wide and holds caves and rock formations cut by the brook through it.

Is it better to drive the coast north to south or south to north?

North to south, if the trip starts on the lake. Coming over Llogara southbound the descent opens onto Dhërmi and the Ceraunian coastline ahead of you, and the ring then continues inland from Sarandë instead of doubling back over the same pass.

What is the best month to combine the Riviera and the lake?

June and September, when the pass, the coast road and the Gjirokastër–Korçë crossing all work at once. Early October suits a trip weighted inland; July and August put every visitor onto one two-lane road with no bypass between Palasë and Qeparo.
