Ohrid to Struga: 14 km to Where Lake Ohrid Drains

Struga lies about 14.5 km north-west of Ohrid along the northern shore, roughly 17 minutes of flat road. The hop matters more than its length: the Black Drin leaves Lake Ohrid inside Struga and cuts the town in two, and Struga is the last Macedonian town before the Qafë Thanë crossing and the turning inland to Vevčani.

Of all the road links out of Ohrid this is the one people underestimate. Fourteen and a half kilometres of northern shore separate two towns standing at almost the same height above the water — Ohrid at 695 m, Struga at 693 — and Misleševo, the Struga-municipality village whose coordinates place it between them, sits at 700 m. The entire drive therefore happens inside seven metres of vertical. What changes along the way is not the altitude but what the lake is doing.

In Ohrid the lake is a basin you look across. In Struga it is a river, because the Black Drin leaves it in the middle of town and carries the water north. That single piece of hydrography is why Struga is a destination rather than a suburb, and why this short transfer repays planning instead of improvising. It is also the hinge of the western corridor: everything bound for Albania, for the Jablanica villages or for the Drin valley leaves the lake road at this point.

The route

Measured on the OpenStreetMap driving profile, Ohrid town centre to Struga town centre is about 14.5 kilometres and roughly 17 minutes with clear roads. The route runs north-west along the top of the lake, with the water on your left for most of it and the Jablanica ridge building on the horizon ahead. There is no pass and no gradient worth naming, which makes this the flattest leg of road in the whole Ohrid basin and the one stretch where a delay is always traffic and never terrain.

Two things on the way are easy to drive straight past. The St Erasmus cave church stands beside the Ohrid–Struga road, where excavation uncovered a three-part basilica and a necropolis of 124 graves dated between the 6th and the 12th centuries. Misleševo, at 41°11′06″N 20°42′31″E on the same stretch, is a working village rather than a sight: 2,969 residents in 2021 against 3,507 in 2002, counted as 2,195 Macedonians, 368 Albanians, 182 Torbeš and others, 50 Turks, 38 Vlachs, 26 Roma, 7 Serbs and 3 Bosniaks. Between mid-July and late August allow longer than the map says — the Ohrid Summer Festival alone runs from 12 July to 20 August.

What you see along the way

The reason to get out of the car in Struga is visible from the first bridge. The Black Drin flows out of Lake Ohrid here and divides the town into two halves, and the water arriving under that bridge is the lake's own — an average discharge of 118 cubic metres per second, draining a basin of 3,504 square kilometres. The river then runs 149 kilometres north and west, crossing into Albania past Debar, before it merges with the White Drin at Kukës to form the Drin and finish in the Adriatic.

The same bridge carries the town's other identity. Every August the Struga Poetry Evenings are held at the Poetry Bridge, and the festival closes with Mostovi — Bridges — a reading and prize-giving staged on the span itself over the Drim. The festival began in 1961 with Macedonian poets only; the Golden Wreath was established in 1966 and went first to Robert Rozhdestvensky. Struga counted 15,009 residents at the 2021 census, which gives some sense of how much of a town this size the festival takes over.

Struga is a junction as much as a destination, and its turnings are what a fourteen-kilometre hop actually buys. Measured on the same driving profile, Struga and Ohrid to Vevčani by road come out at about 12 and 26 kilometres, so the inland leg costs less from Struga than the shore hop that got you there. That leg climbs to a village strung between 800 and 950 metres on the flank of Jablanica, where the Vevčani Springs do the opposite of everything else here — water arriving out of the limestone instead of draining away from it. The spring elevations behind the outlets explain the volume: Jankov Kamen at 1,200 metres, Mala Livada above 1,600 and Golina, the highest, over 2,000.

The village's two other claims are dates rather than sights. The Vevčani Carnival falls on 13 and 14 January with the Julian New Year, and the self-declared Republic of Vevčani, proclaimed in 2002 alongside the municipality, issued a souvenir banknote called the Ličnik.

The second turning keeps the water on the left and runs out of Macedonia. Kališta stands on the lake edge at about 7 kilometres from the town centre, Radožda at 10, and past Radožda's last houses the tarmac climbs to the frontier at about 17. Three numbers, one carriageway: the monastery, the cave church and the exit to Albania share a single road, so a car booked only as far as Struga stops one turning short of all of them.

At the border

Struga is the staging point for Albania, and that is the second reason a 14 km hop earns a page of its own. The Qafë Thanë/Kjafasan crossing lies roughly 17 kilometres beyond the town, reached by staying with the water past Kališta and Radožda and only then climbing away from it. From Struga the driving route to Tirana measures about 117 kilometres, a shade over two hours before any formalities, on European route E852 — 134 kilometres end to end — by way of Librazhd and Elbasan.

Which crossing is meant spoils more arrangements here than anything else, so it is worth stating flatly. Qafë Thanë pairs with Kjafasan on the Prrenjas–Struga road at the northern end of the water. Tushemisht pairs with Sveti Naum on the Pogradec–Ohrid road at the southern end. Prrenjas, the first Albanian municipality past the northern post, is the one this transfer feeds; Pogradec, on the far side of the water, is reached from Ohrid instead. A Struga pickup arranged for a Sveti Naum departure sends the car the wrong way round a very large lake.
