Ohrid to Struga: 14 km to Where Lake Ohrid Drains

Struga sits about 14 km north-west of Ohrid on the northern shore of Lake Ohrid, roughly 17 minutes by road. Struga matters beyond its size: the Black Drin leaves the lake here and splits the town in two, and Struga is the last Macedonian town before the Qafë Thanë crossing into Albania.

Of all the road links out of Ohrid this is the one people underestimate. Fourteen kilometres of lake shore separate two towns that sit at almost the same height above the water — Ohrid at 695 m, Struga at 693 m — and the drive between them barely climbs. What changes is what the lake is doing. In Ohrid it is a basin you look across; in Struga it is a river, because the Black Drin leaves the lake in the middle of town and carries its water north.

That single piece of hydrography is why Struga is a destination and not a suburb, and why this short transfer is worth planning rather than improvising. It is also the practical hinge of the whole western corridor: everything heading for Albania, for Vevčani or for the Jablanica villages leaves the main lake road here.

The route

Measured on the OpenStreetMap driving profile, Ohrid town centre to Struga town centre is about 14.5 kilometres and roughly 17 minutes with clear roads. The route runs north-west along the top of the lake, with the water on your left for most of it and the Jablanica ridge building on the horizon ahead. There is no pass and no gradient worth naming; this is the flattest leg of road in the Ohrid area.

Allow longer than the map says between mid-July and late August, when the shore road carries festival and beach traffic; the Ohrid Summer Festival alone runs between 12 July and 20 August every year. At both ends the last stretch is on foot rather than on wheels: Ohrid's old town climbs a pedestrianised hill above the harbour, and Struga's centre is a compact grid of short bridges over the Drin that traffic threads around rather than through.

What you see along the way

The reason to get out of the car in Struga is visible from the first bridge. The Black Drin flows out of Lake Ohrid here and divides the town into two halves, and the water arriving under that bridge is the lake's own — an average discharge of 118 cubic metres per second, draining a basin of 3,504 square kilometres. The river then runs 149 kilometres north and west, crossing into Albania past Debar, before it merges with the White Drin at Kukës to form the Drin and finish in the Adriatic.

The same bridge carries the town's other identity. Every August the Struga Poetry Evenings are held at the Poetry Bridge, and the festival closes with Mostovi — Bridges — a reading and prize-giving staged on the span itself over the Drim. The festival began in 1961 with Macedonian poets only; the Golden Wreath was established in 1966 and went first to Robert Rozhdestvensky. Struga counted 15,009 residents at the 2021 census, which gives some sense of how much of the town the festival takes over.

Nearby

South-west of Struga the road follows the western shore of Lake Ohrid, and two of the more rewarding stops on the whole lake sit along it. Kališta monastery is about 7 kilometres from the town centre on the water's edge; it is believed to date from the 16th century and holds frescoes of the 14th and 15th. Another 3 kilometres on, Radožda — 10 kilometres south of Struga — has the cave Church of St Archangel Michael built into the Jablanica range above the village in the 13th century, with most of its frescoes from the 14th and one 13th-century painting still preserved.

Inland the ground rises quickly. Vevčani lies about 12 kilometres from Struga at 800 to 950 metres, and its springs push out an estimated 1,500 litres per second at their spring peak, fed from sources as high as Golina at over 2,000 metres. The village declared its tongue-in-cheek Independent Republic in 2002 and holds its carnival at the Julian New Year in mid-January — the one date in this area that genuinely belongs to winter.

At the border

Struga is the staging point for Albania, and that is the second reason a 14 km hop earns a page of its own. The Qafë Thanë/Kjafasan crossing joins Struga municipality on the Macedonian side to Prrenjas municipality on the Albanian side, and the pass lies roughly 17 kilometres from Struga by road, reached by carrying on down the western shore of the lake past Kališta and Radožda and then climbing away from the water. From Struga the driving route to Tirana measures about 117 kilometres, or a shade over two hours before any border formalities.

That road is European route E852, 134 kilometres end to end, linking Ohrid with Tirana through Struga and then Librazhd and Elbasan. Worth getting right: the two Albanian crossings on this lake are routinely confused in travel write-ups. Qafë Thanë pairs with Kjafasan on the Prrenjas–Struga road, while Tushemisht pairs with Sveti Naum on the Pogradec–Ohrid road at the southern end of the lake. Booking a Struga pickup for a Sveti Naum crossing sends you the wrong way around a very large lake.
